Monica Chen, a reporter for the Taiwanese news site Digitimes, is reporting that netbook manufacturers are considering to continue offering Windows XP with netbooks based on Intel Atom N270 and N280 processors. The main reason seem to be increasing costs that a switch from Windows XP to Windows 7 would cause as the prices for Windows 7 would double those of Windows XP. Netbook manufacturers are currently paying between $25-30 to put Windows XP on their netbooks. Latest quotes suggest that they would have to pay between $45-55 for Windows 7.
Negotiations seem to be still underway as netbook vendors are trying to convince Microsoft to reduce the price per unit for Windows 7 based netbooks. Most netbook manufacturers seem to plan to start offering Windows 7 on the upcoming Intel Atom processor generation
